DOVER Athletic's new high-profile manager Neville Southall is under no illusions about the financial restrictions he will be working under at Crabble with the club still in talks with potential new investors and no cash currently available for new players.

The former Wales and Everton goalkeeper stressed: "I know there's no money but that's part of the challenge, and I am getting paid less than most of the players are on.

"I have been involved in other clubs during my career who didn't have any money either, so it's not a new situation for me. In fact, Dover have probably got more money than the Welsh FA!"

Whites' new chairman, Gordon Cowan, said: "We are delighted to welcome Neville to the club. His experience and knowledge of football, both nationally and internationally, at the highest level, will undoubtedly increase the club's prospects of attracting players, more support and more sponsorship."

Cowan confirmed that Clive Walker, who has been Whites' caretaker manager since Gary Bellamy's departure last month, would revert to assistant manager again.

Southall says he intends to make sure that he gets good value out of those players who are at Crabble. He said: "Players who don't play very often, whether they are injured or suspended or whatever, are a waste of space as far as I am concerned. We can't afford to carry any passengers in this situation."

If he is as good as his word, a few Whites players will already be looking at the "exit" sign. Southall lives in North Wales but he will be moving to the Dover area as soon as possible. He said: "You can't do the job properly otherwise."
