Spurs create money-spinning night for Whites

CASH-STRAPPED Dover enjoyed their biggest gate of the season for the visit of a Tottenham XI at Crabble last night. New manager Neville Southall persuaded the Premiership club to send a team down to Dover for a friendly at short notice to help Whites through their current financial plight.

With the normal admission prices reduced, a crowd of 1,620 turned up to watch a Spurs side which contained Norwegian internationals Steffen Iversen and Oyvind Leonhardsen as well as defender Alton Thelwell, who was on the subs' bench on Wednesday night for the first leg of the Worthington Cup semi-final with Chelsea.

Iversen opened the scoring from close range just before half-time and, although midfielder Neil Le Bihan equalised from a penalty early in the second half, Spurs then took control with three more goals from youngsters John Piercy, John Sutton and Yannick Kamaman.

But this was a night when the money paid at the turnstiles was clearly far more important than the scoreline where Dover were concerned, and afterwards Jim Gleeson, a member of the club's management, said they were "absolutely delighted" with the attendance.

Dover are in action again on Saturday when they are away to Stevenage in the FA Umbro Trophy third round.
