Whites boss fears exodus of players

DOVER ATHLETIC'S manager Clive Walker says he is in limbo after the club's three-man board resigned last week.

The Dover manager fears he could lose several players if he is not put in the picture quickly. Walker has eight players out of contract and wants to ensure there is no mass exodus as there was last season.

But he cannot offer contracts until he knows exactly where he and the club stand, and the feared exodus could soon be under way with Jake Leberl, Whites’ Player of the Year, and fellow defender Lee Shearer believed to be in talks with Woking.

General manager Bill Williams said: “We have had no official approach from Woking, but Jake and Lee are now free agents and we are led to believe that Woking are in talks with both of them.”

Walker meanwhile is still unsure about his own future if the Supporters’ Trust-backed consortium succeeds in gaining control of the club. He told the club’s offical website: “I hope they want me to still be the manager because I genuinely believe I can turn things around for the club.

“I'm not saying that winning the Dr Martens League is going to be easy, because it won't.

But we already have the basis of a team that is more than capable of challenging for the title.

“I know the league well and it's basically a scaled down version of the Conference. There are some very good sides in there, but we've gone to some very difficult places in the Conference, so it won't be daunting for us.

“However I must find out what's happening very soon because otherwise we'll end up in the same situation as last year, losing everyone.

“ I've spoken to the lads and will be speaking to them all again about next season, but until I know what the new board want I can't go offering new contracts to anyone.”

Midfielder Jimmy Strouts revealed that the players have not yet been paid for the last week of the season.

He said: “The situation is bothering a lot of the players. We want to play for a settled club, but we don't know whether we're going to get paid from one week to the next.”
