Dover boss Andy Hessenthaler is calling for the standard of refereeing to be looked at.

He felt his side were on the wrong end of two key decisions in a last-gasp 1-0 defeat to Maidenhead last Saturday at Crabble.

Teenager Luke Baptiste was sent off for a second booking in the final 10 minutes, before Josh Kelly scored deep into injury time after a goalmouth scramble, in which Hessenthaler felt goalkeeper Alexis Andre Jr may have been fouled.

Hessenthaler watched the match from the stands as he served a one-game touchline ban following post-match remarks relating to the 6-5 defeat at Wrexham.

“It was a good view,” said Hessenthaler. “In the second half, I sat in the stand behind the dug-out.

“At times, you can see things differently. It was just frustrating, watching a referee’s performance not at our level.

“I think the Head of Refereeing needs to look at the standard because, for me, they are not good enough for this level.

“Unfortunately for us, the better ones go into the league.

"But when you speak to The Referees’ Association and they agree with you, it doesn’t make it any easier.”

Midfielder Baptiste had put in another impressive display, having signed a professional deal with the club alongside fellow 18-year-old George Wilkinson, before he was red-carded.

Hessenthaler bemoaned: “The frustrating part of it was a decision by the referee has cost us the game. The sending off was ridiculous!

“It’s a foul the other way to us but he has given young Luke Baptiste another yellow card. That put us down to 10 men and they scored from a corner after a scramble and, for me, that looked like it could be a foul on the keeper.

“So I’m disappointed in the referee’s performance, not disappointed in the players’ performances.

“It was another young team on Saturday with Harrison Byford making his senior debut.

"It was another positive performance without getting the result we deserve.”

Hessenthaler also revealed why on-loan Watford goalkeeper Adam Parkes has been replaced by Alexis Andre Jr between the sticks.

“I had a good chat with Parkesy. He has been let go by Watford,” he explained.

“With his agent, he is looking to get a club. I don’t believe the lad wants to play National League level - I believe he is better than that.

“I had a chat with him and said I want to look to the future in the last 10 games, and Alexis has come in and done well.

“Parkesy will train with us during the week. But he will train with Watford on Saturdays, rather than being with us.”

Bottom side Dover visit ninth-placed Boreham Wood this Friday, with the Hertfordshire outfit winless in nine.

“We are craving to get into the pluses,” said Hessenthaler, whose side remain on minus three points.

“We play a team on Friday that had a fantastic FA Cup run. I know their manager (Luke Garrard) really well.

“They went to Everton and put on a good show (losing 2-0). But back in the bread and butter, it’s just not happening for them. They have got games in hand and can still make the play-offs.

“We will make it difficult for Boreham Wood. Then we have Woking at home on Monday. They are not playing for anything - they can’t go up, they can’t go down.

“So we should aim to try and win both of those games.”

The match against Woking will also see former striker Inih Effiong, who scored twice against Whites in December, return to Crabble.

Hessenthaler revealed: “I have got a good relationship with him. When it was confirmed we were down, he sent me a fantastic message.

“He had his critics at the club but he got 16 or 17 goals for us. There’s a way of managing certain players and I loved working with him. He could be frustrating at times but, for me, we miss him as a player.

“It will be good to see him - but we have to keep him quiet!

"I’m sure he will get a good reception from the majority of the supporters.”

Midfielder Koby Arthur (groin) and right-back Myles Judd (thigh) missed the Maidenhead match but may return this week.
