Manager Andy Hessenthaler says struggling Dover Athletic can still attract players

05:00, 10 December 2021

Andy Hessenthaler believes Dover are still capable of attracting players despite their league position.

Boss Hessenthaler feels the chance to play National League football is enough of a pull, should he be in a position to add to the squad in light of Ricky Miller’s departure.

Dover are yet to win this season, and are 23 points from safety, but that shouldn’t put players off in the manager’s eyes.

“I think what sells it to them is it’s National League football, that’s how good this league is,” said Hessenthaler.

“Come and play in the National League and you get a lot of coverage and there’s games on BT.

“I think players know what this league is about.

“Whether we’re fighting for our lives or pushing for promotion, it’s an opportunity for players to put themselves on the map.

“I think my players, as much as we’re struggling, they’re putting themselves on the map the way they’re performing, individually and collectively.

“Who knows what’s going to happen at the end of the season?

“What’s going to happen with players? We just don’t know.

“We’re just trying to get this win we deserve and keep fighting.”

Tomorrow’s game, on paper at least, represents Dover’s best chance yet to get the victory they’ve been working so hard for.

Hosts King’s Lynn have lost their last eight league games, a run that cost manager Ian Culverhourse, the ex-Norwich player, his job.

The Norfolk outfit have won only twice in 17 games and sit second-bottom, seven points from safety.
