An 18-month-old boy died from multiple injuries, including broken bones to his ribs, feet and toes, it has been revealed.
A former couple are now due to go on trial accused of murdering little Alfie Phillips as harrowing details of the baby's death emerged in court today.
Prosecutor Jennifer Knight KC said the death was due to the trauma from "the overwhelming cumulative nature of the injuries and asphyxiation".
Jack Benham and Sian Hedges are set to go on trial in October accused of murdering the youngster in Hernhill, near Faversham in 2020.
Alfie died on November 28 after staying the night in a caravan, a court heard.
Benham, 34, of Highstreet Road, Hernhill and 26-year-old Hedges – Alfie's mother and Benham's former partner – of Fillace Park, Yelverton, Devon were in sole charge of Alfie, Maidstone Crown Court was told.
Both appeared by prison video links for the 15-minute hearing.
In November 2020, Kent Police patrols and South East Coast Ambulance Service were called to the property following concerns for the welfare of the boy.
Alfie was taken to hospital for medical attention and was later pronounced deceased.
Benham and Hedges were arrested two-and-a-half years ago but are now charged with murder and causing or allowing the death of a child.
Both were remanded in custody and will go on trial on October 3 when the three-week trial will be heard by a High Court judge who is yet to be appointed.
An application for bail on behalf of Hedges was rejected by Judge Julian Smith, who ruled pleas will be entered during the pair's next plea and preparation hearing on May 19.
