Gorgeous gardens were open to the public for the day – and a visit from a Great British Bake Off favourite was the icing on the cake.

Faversham Open Gardens and garden market day on Sunday, attracted around 1,000 visitors, who came to admire 36 gardens and visit 33 stalls in the Market Place.

Jane Beedle, Great British Bake Off 2016 finalist, who is also a garden designer, declared the popular event officially open and cast her expert eye over a number of gardens.

Tickets were sold at the Faversham Open Gardens stall in the market and at the Faversham Society Visitor Information Centre in Preston Street.

The day is organised by a committee of six dedicated gardeners, aided by a team of volunteers on behalf of the Faversham Society, for which funds are raised.

Visitors descended from all over the county to admire the blooms, and the open gardens event also saw guests from Holland and France arrive this year.

Spokesman Alexandra Campbell said: “Many streets, such as Newton Road, had several gardens open, so visitors enjoyed seeing how several similar outside spaces, almost side-by-side, can look so different."

Children were entertained with a hunt the golden pebble competition that took place in 12 gardens, as mums and dads admired the plants.

Golden pebble finders received a voucher which they exchanged for prizes at the market stall including children’s garden tools and seeds.
