Fire crews tackled a huge blaze involving eight boats and a number of buildings.

The fire broke out at a boatyard in Iron Wharf, Faversham at 1.30am.

Eight boats in dry dock have been destroyed, along with three temporary cabin buildings and a workshop.

A man has since been arrested on suspicion of arson.

Fire crews remain at the scene, and are working to cool down gas cylinders and damp down hot spots.

People in the area have been told to keep windows and doors closed as a precaution, if they are in sight of the smoke plume resulting from the blaze.

At its height, six fire engines, a bulk water carrier and a height vehicle were at the scene, although this has now been reduced to two.

Dan Salter from Creekside Vinyl took these dramatic photos of the blaze.

He said: "Several fire engines woke me. Always worry about my shop so got dressed and investigated.

"Several boats and workshops destroyed at Iron Wharf boatyard.

"Got moved on by police due to fears of exploding gas bottles. Was still raging/spreading when I left at 3am."

A fire service spokesman said: "When fire crews were called to the scene they were presented with a fully developed fire involving a number of boats, temporary cabin buildings and a workshop.

"At its height, six fire engines, a bulk water carrier and a height vehicle attended the scene, and crews quickly set about bringing the fire under control and preventing it from spreading to further property, using hose reel jets and ground monitors.

"Two fire engines are likely to remain on the scene until mid afternoon today to continue monitoring the cylinders and damping down.

"Kent Police are also in attendance. The cause is not yet known."

The ambulance service's Hazardous Area Response Team was also called, but no one was injured.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 2.09am on Thursday 14 September 2017 by Kent Fire and Rescue Service regarding a fire at Iron Wharf in Faversham.

"Officers attended the scene and assisted fire crews who extinguished the fire.

"An area of the wharf will remain closed while enquiries are made into the circumstances surrounding the fire."

No roads surrounding the boatyard are closed.
