A four-hour siege of a house in Faversham has ended peacefully.

Armed police and other officers cordoned off a street on a council estate in the town after reports that an 'armed' man was holed up in one of the houses and was refusing to leave.

They were responding to reports of a 'disturbance' inside the property.

Negotiators spent more than four hours talking to the 50-year-old man, who was said to be very "emotional", before he finally gave himself up shortly after 5pm on Saturday.

The man was arrested by officers at the scene and led to a waiting police car to be driven away for questioning.

The police and other emergency services had arrived at the quiet residential road at 12.56pm after reports that a disturbed and 'armed' man was inside one of the houses and was refusing to leave.

Larksfield Road was cordoned off with police tape.

Bemused residents stood around in small groups waiting to see what the result of the stand-off would be.

One resident, who asked not to be named, said: "I've never seen so many police for just one guy."

As well as teams of police officers, an ambulance and a fire crew were also in attendance.

At one point around 12 emergency vehicles were in and around the vicinity.

Kent Police said the man, from Faversham, has been arrested on suspicion of affray and criminal damage and is currently in police custody.

The police thanked residents for their patience and co-operation whilst officers resolved the matter safely.

No other people were involved and no-one was injured.
