Faversham Town Council has handed out more than £1,000... for a potato peeler.

At their full council meeting, the council unanimously agreed to dish out a grant for £1,112 to Age UK for a “project to purchase a new potato peeling machine”.

The money comes out of a bundle of cash the council puts aside for grants to local community groups and charities, many of which were decided during a budget meeting in January.

So far, money has gone to the Faversham Society, Faversham Christmas Lights Committee, Faversham Assistance Centre, Citizens Advice Bureau, Kentish Sail Association and the Hop Festival.

The Faversham News hit the online shops to compare the market for potato peeling machines and found the following:

• Clifford James potato peeling machine £29.99
• Kenwood potato peeling machine £65.99
• Even the large, commercial potato peeling machines were priced at around £600 at the most.

During the meeting, Cllr Anita Walker (Con) said: “Age UK do a marvellous job in this town and I think we should do all we can to support them.”

Cllr Andy Culham (Con) said: “I would support this. If this is what they want from their grant, a potato peeler machine, then we should be inclined to support it with the full amount.”
