Faversham Creek is about to become even more of a learning hub.

The government has just invested in a six-week training programme for unemployed people in Faversham, focused around the Creek.

Organised by both the Faversham Creek Trust and Brents Community Association, a range of projects will be collaborated on to form the scheme, providing training, guidance and support for those out of work.

Activities include designing and building a punt to be used by the Westbrook group for Stonebridge Pond, working as part of Kent Wildlife’s creek warden volunteer scheme and even having the opportunity to sail a Thames barge.

West Kent College will be delivering an IT based programme, providing a City and Guilds qualification and participants will have training on setting up websites and blogs.

Chairman of the Creek trust Chris Wright said: “This programme reinforces our commitment to education and supporting the local community in improving their skills and life opportunities.

“We are asking our members and local businesses to come forward and be a mentor. Full training and support will be given.”

David Selves, landlord of the Phoenix, will be offering his minibus for participants to visit businesses and travel to their activities.

The programme is free, does not affect benefit entitlement and runs from Monday for six weeks from 9.30am - 3pm, half hour for lunch which is provided.

Chairman of the Brents Community Association Angie Simmons said: “It is very difficult for unemployed people in Faversham to access training and support; we don’t even have a Jobcentre here."

“We hope our residents on the North Preston estate and anyone else, including lone parents, having to survive on benefits will contact us and book a place.

“We are also providing help with debt management, guidance on the new Universal Credit, and advice on how to reduce gas and electricity bills.

“People will also be offered work experience where possible.”
