Police are on the hunt for "disturbing" hare coursers who abandoned their dogs and escaped from pursuing officers.

Three lurchers were recovered late on Saturday night in Otterden, between Faversham and Lenham, but two men evaded police.

The suspected hare coursers were chased in the darkness, at about 11pm, before getting out of their 4x4 and making a run for it.

Officers seized the three dogs and vehicle, and found 14 dead rabbits inside.

An injured fox was also in the car.

The animal later died and the dogs were taken to a nearby vet for treatment.

Forensic officers have examined the 4x4 and investigators are trying to trace the two men.

Sergeant Darren Walshaw said: "The level of animal cruelty displayed on this occasion is disturbing and we are committed to finding out who is responsible for this cruel and illegal act.

"In addition to the pain and suffering inflicted on the animals, the suspects have also trespassed and caused excessive damage to property."
