A dog had to be rushed to the vets after it was found wandering the streets with a hole behind its eye.
Doris, a female Jack Russell Terrier, was spotted in a "very distressing condition" around Eastling Road, Painters Forstal, in Faversham.
The poorly pooch was rescued by Swale council stray dog service and rushed to the vets on Wednesday evening.
She is described as being very thin and weak – weighing just 3.7kg – and all of her bones are prominent with little to no coverage.
The stray dog service posted online: "Our biggest concern though is the hole behind her left eye.
"It's so deep that you can see the muscles contracting when she blinks.
"It was showing clear signs of infection as it was oozing puss and smelt terribly."
She was taken to Bobbing Hill Veterinary Surgery in Sittingbourne where the vet's overall consensus was that her injury was either a ballistic type or a severe dog bite – but the exact cause remains unclear.
The stray's teeth and left eye are also showing signs of decay and damage, which is thought to be due to the hole in her head.
Despite this Doris is still very trusting and has remained calm and friendly, the stray dog service said..
She is now on strong antibiotics and is starting a re-feeding programme.
The terrier will need further treatment to examine the extent of her injuries and has been moved to a foster-based rescue today meaning she can receive constant care.
The service added: "Sadly she isn't chipped and there were no obvious signs that one had been removed.
"A message to her owner. Unless you can provide evidence that she's long-term missing or has been stolen, this is a shocking case of neglect.
"Thank you to Bobbing Hill Veterinary Surgery for seeing us at such short notice."
If you recognise her or have any information relating to the owner, please contact Swale council on 01795 417850.
