A woman has been injured after falling onto tracks at Faversham railway station.

The victim, a 33-year-old woman, is thought to have walked off the platform and into the path of an oncoming train that was pulling into the station.

She is believed to have suffered severe burns from an electric shock when she landed on the live rail last night (Monday).

The emergency services were called just after 7.30pm.

All trains were stopped and the station was closed, including Preston Lane footbridge, which was guarded by police officers.

Spokesman for SECamb Rich Airey said: "We sent two cars, two ambulances, two of our Hazardous Area Response vehicles and an air ambulance.

"The woman was conscious but had suffered electrical burns.

"She was taken by priority to Medway Maritime Hospital."

A specialist hazardous recovery team managed to pull her clear after the current was switched off.

At least two ambulances, British Transport Police vehicles and a fire engine were parked outside the station and the air ambulance landed on Faversham recreation ground.

The train company said all lines were blocked, and British Transport Police confirmed its officers were at the station.

A spokesman for the British Transport Police said: "Officers from BTP and colleagues from Kent Police attended the scene.

"A 33-year-old woman was taken to a place of safety."

Network Rail engineers were called to "assess the situation" and replacement bus services were organised between Gillingham, and Ramsgate and Dover.

Commuters saw delays of more than 70 minutes between Sittingbourne, Margate and Canterbury East following the incident.

Trains started running again at 8.50pm but there were delays until the end of service.
