Davies and Eason in Preston Street, Faversham, closes after 38 years

00:00, 14 April 2017

“Aggressive marketing” from multinationals and supermarkets has forced the closure of one of Faversham’s longest running businesses after 38 years.

The news that the much-loved Davies and Eason in Preston Street has shut its doors for the very last time has shocked and saddened the town.

Many said the electrical retailer was the “best shop in town” and others said it is a “massive blow” and an “end of an era” for Faversham.

Ted Eason told the Faversham News: “The aggressive marketing from supermarkets, multinationals and the internet proved too much to compete against.

“Although trading has been difficult for a number of years, over the last few months the footfall has dropped dramatically and sadly the decision was made to finally close the business.”

Mr Eason has been looking after customers for nearly 60 years, having joined Gowers and Jones in Court Street at the age of 15. He founded Davies and Eason with Leon de la Croix and they moved to Preston Street in the early 1980s.

Mr Eason added: “Together with my son Darren and staff Gary, Phil and Ian, we have done our best to provide a good service to the people of Faversham and will miss all of our loyal customers.”

Many of his customers have voiced their disappointment on social media.

Richard Cornelius said: “Bad news for Faversham, the best shop in the town Davies and Eason has closed.

“They have served this town for more years than I can remember and Ted and his staff would go out of their way to help people.

“It will be a big loss to the town.”

Helen Carr said: “I went in there yesterday and was chuffed I could get what I needed in Faversham and buy local.”

Justine-Louise Bolton added: “So sad. Congratulations for being such a huge asset to Faversham.

“Another great business to end in a dying town. Such a shame.

“Really sad news and such lovely, helpful people. Thank you.”
