POLICE searching for two men who crashed a stolen lorry through a rail bridge say they have DNA evidence after they found blood on the lorry seat.

The men were seen running away after the Ford tipper truck smashed through the bridge which takes Whitstable Road, Faversham, over the mail rail line to Thanet around noon on Thursday.

The lorry was stolen from an address in Milton Regis High Street on September 21.

Eye witness Mrs Janice Kelly was talking to builders, who had been working on her house, when she saw the lorry swerve then hit the bridge.

She said:"I was talking to the builders when the lorry passed. My attention was drawn to it because it was rattling a lot.

"I noticed it was on the wrong side of the road and there was a bang as it hit the bridge on its passenger side and then it went off across the road and crashed through the wall.

"I thought it was going to land on the railway line but it was balanced above it.I was frozen for a minute but then I went to see if the people in the lorry were OK.The lorry was hanging over the side and then I saw the men gettting away."

Faversham fire fighters used the animal rescue unit to pull the lorry back onto the road. The train line was closed while masonry was cleared and the electric current was switched off which delayed trains. The bridge was still closed to traffic on Friday morning.

A police spokeswoman said: "There are forensic opportunities because one of the men was injured. We have searched the area including hospitals but we have not found the suspects yet."
