The former home of one of the most famous families in Kent, or at least in Faversham, is now up for sale.
Delbridge House, which is located just next to the town’s station, was built for Julius Shepherd, of the Shepherd Neame family.
Julius took over Britain’s oldest brewery in 1770 and is thought to have been responsible for modernising the company by replacing horses with a steam engine for the malt grinding and pumping process.
The Grade II listed Georgian house, which has also been used as a Constitutional Club and a basement nightclub over the years, is now back on the market as a family home for £1.8m.
The property has six bedrooms, including a master bedroom with a freestanding copper bathtub in the en suite bathroom and five tall sash windows, a kitchen with a breakfast bar and stainless steel range cooker, and a large family bathroom.
There are a number of additional rooms, such as the walk-in pantry, formal reception room and the 43ft basement, which was formerly used as a nightclub and still has the bar from its previous incarnation in place.
The house also boasts many period features, including a stained glass window, an open fireplace and the original spindle staircase.
The outdoor space surrounding the 7,500 sq ft property includes a paved courtyard and garden with shrubs and plenty of space for potted plants. Due to its position, the garden also catches the evening sun in the summer months.
The house is nestled in the heart of the historic market town of Faversham, just a stone’s throw from the train station, high street, shops, bars and restaurants.
From several of the rooms you can take in great chimney top views of the medieval town, and it’s only a short walk to picturesque countryside spots such as the Oare Marshes and Gunpowder Works and the creek.
The bustling city of Canterbury and much-loved seaside town of Whitstable are also a short drive from your doorstep.
