They discovered a man outside bleeding and losing consciousness who said he had been stabbed and needed help.

Office administrator Dagmar, 44, says it was a horrifying scene.

"He was bleeding a lot from his chest and clearly in distress and slipping into unconsciousness," she said.

"We got some towels and Scott, who is a builder and first aid trained, applied pressure to the wound to try and stem the blood but we got quite a lot of it over ourselves.

"He seemed in a bad way and kept drifting off but we tried to keep him awake."

"It was dark and we didn't know who else might be about with with weapons."

The couple called an ambulance and both paramedics and police arrived on the scene in Church Road.

"He was talking a bit but wasn't making much sense, although he told us he was 42 and Algerian," said Dagmar.
