A man carrying a large axe has destroyed a sign of Faversham parliamentary candidate Helen Whately.
The sign - which promotes the Arts, Heritage and Tourism minister - had been placed along Ashford Road, near Lenham ahead of the General Election.
It happened at around 4.20pm today.
Edward Kelly, who lives near Charing, confronted the man at the time of the incident.
He told KentOnline: "I witnessed someone jump out of a car with a large axe and destroy the sign which was on private land.
"I didn't see the driver but I witnessed a passenger smashing it with a full length axe.
"I noticed what they were doing so pulled up onto the side of road behind their car.
"I confronted him but he jumped in passenger seat and they drove off quickly towards Charing."
Police confirmed that they are investigating the incident.
A spokeswoman said: "We received a report at around 5.50pm on Wednesday 4 December 2019 that a sign situated on a roadside in Lenham had been damaged earlier in the afternoon.
"Inquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident."
Mrs Whately will be hoping to hang on to the seat after increasing her majority to more than 17,000 in 2017. If she wins next Friday it will be her third time representing the constituency.
