ABOUT 300 people packed the parish church at Faversham to pay their last respects to a couple found murdered at their home.

Hundreds more lined the streets as Terry and Vera Martin's funeral cortege drove through the town.

The Rev Canon Tony Oehring conducted the service for 72-year-old Terry and 78-year-old Vera who were found with multiple injuries at their terrace house in Abbey Street, Faversham, in January.

Det Ch Inspector Martin Harris who led the inquiry into the couple’s death paid his respects at the funeral along with Faversham Mayor Cllr Mick Gates and Swale Mayor Cllr Bryan Mulhern.

Mr Oehring said: "We must remember the Martins for the life they lived and not for the death they suffered."

John Baker, a neighbour and friend of the Martins, spoke about their life and drew smiles when he described how the couple met at Heaters detonator factory in Faversham where they both worked. "It seems Terry spent all his time winding Vera up," he said.

Mr Baker said the couple were inseparable and could often be seen holding hands. And he echoed the sentiments of friends and neighbours who said it was merciful that the couple died together.

The funeral procession with floral displays on each coffin in the shape of TERRY and VERA travelled through the market place and Preston Street where shopkeepers, shoppers and residents lined the way.

Later, members of the family and close friends attended the cremation at Charing crematorium.

*Brett Clifton, 21, of Beckett Street, Faversham, has been charged with killing the couple. He is due to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on April 21 for a plea and directions hearing.
