MP Helen Whately has been appointed Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism - her first job in government.

The Conservative MP, who represents Faversham and Mid Kent, was joins the department of culture media and sport and her ministerial responsibilities include libraries and museums, and gambling and lotteries.

It comes as part of a reshuffle of ministers by Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

Since becoming an MP in 2015, Mrs Whately has had several roles in Parliament, including serving on the health select committee and setting up the all-party group for fruit and vegetable farmers.

She was also deputy chair of the Conservative Party before being selected for her new role.

"It's a huge honour to have been appointed Minister for the Arts, Heritage and Tourism," Mrs Whately said. "I have lost count of the number of people who have told me I have the best job in government.

"I am excited to be taking on new responsibilities, but my top priority will continue to be working hard for Faversham and Mid Kent."

The day after her appointment, Mrs Whately made her first visit as minister to the Natural History Museum in London.

She added: "As well as supporting national cultural treasures - the museums and galleries everyone has heard of - I am also looking forward to supporting cultural activities outside our big cities, like local choirs, galleries and drama groups in Faversham and around Maidstone.

"I know from my constituency - which includes the stunning Leeds Castle and market town of Faversham - how important tourism is to the economy.

"I am looking forward to supporting the many fantastic tourist attractions and destinations across out country."
