A Kent market town famous for having independent traders rather than national chains is set to welcome its first ever Poundland.
According to papers submitted to Swale Borough Council, the discount retailer could be poised to take over the former M&Co building in Preston Street, Faversham.
It is hoped the new store will open in December though it is not known exactly when or how many people could find themselves in work at the shop, with the application only referring to a potential change of signage.
It comes after KentOnline revealed another discount chain, Home Bargains, is poised to take over the former Morrisons superstore in North Lane – with pictures showing the gutted shell of the site ready to be redesigned.
Multi-Save is also still operating out of Market Street, though proposals had been put forward to demolish the building in April.
Faversham has built a reputation as a hotspot for independent traders, rather than chains.
It has no McDonald’s, KFC, Starbucks – or even a Chinese takeaway delivery service.
But town councillor Rob Crayford told KentOnline he welcomed the potential arrival of Poundland.
“Retail businesses are always welcomed as these bring jobs and help drive the local economy,” he said.
“I am pleased that this large vacant retail space will be used again and we are lucky to have a range of different types of shops within Faversham.
“The rise of discount pricing shops across the country is a direct result of the cost of living crisis. Inflation and interest rates are still high and families are still struggling to make ends meet.
“It is therefore no surprise that demand for lower prices is increasing.”
Poundland has been contacted for comment.
