Faversham’s very own Bear Grylls has been crowned a joint winner of Channel 4’s SAS: Who Dares Wins.

Rugby player Freddie Iron, 25, is one of 30 civilians who were put through their paces by four ex-Special Forces soldiers in the new five-part series, which has received rave reviews.

Freddie, a Cambridge graduate who now works as an oil analyst in London, was the youngest ever to complete the epic Enduroman Arch to Arc challenge back in August, running 87 miles, swimming the Channel and cycling 181 miles.

He is now being pushed to his limits yet again with the brand new show, which recreates the SAS’s secret selection process.

In the last five episodes, the 30 recruits were whittled down to just two as the weakest members are exposed in gruelling tasks.

Freddie, of The Mall, has had to endure an eight-mile run with a 30lb backpack, which saw one man taken to hospital with hyperventilation, and exhausting physical assessments with just a few hours sleep.

At the remote military base in Wales, the men have been blindfolded and interrogated, shouted at and scrutinised by the former soldiers, who all have their own terrifying tales of being caught in gunfire in Afghanistan, running for their lives and post-traumatic stress after returning from warzones.

Freddie took part in the sickener task, seven hours of constant training until at least four people dropped out when they could no longer physically or mentally endure any more.

The final episode which aired tonight (Monday) saw him battle through 40 hours of interrogation.

Freddie is now back at home and watching the shows from the comfort of his sofa, celebrating the knowledge he was one of two winners of the show.

In August, Freddie raised more than £30,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support with his courageous efforts in the Arch to Arc challenge, becoming one of only 23 to ever complete it.
