Emergency services have descended on a railway station after a man was hit by a train.

Train operator Southeastern said the incident in Faversham had "severely disrupted" services.

There is a huge emergency presence at the town's station, with an air ambulance also seen flying overhead.

Transport police confirmed they were called to Faversham railway station shortly after 1.30pm following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended and a man is being taken to hospital for assessment," a spokesperson said.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious."

Four fire vehicles, two ambulance incident response units, one ambulance and a police car were at the scene.

The ambulance service says the man was treated at the scene before being airlifted to a London hospital in a serious condition.

Following the incident, a Southeastern spokesman said: "A person has been hit by a train in the Faversham area.

"Whilst emergency services attend the incident, trains between Sittingbourne and Margate/Canterbury East may be cancelled, delayed by up to 60 minutes or revised.

"Disruption is expected until 4pm."

The routes affected were London St Pancras to Ramsgate via Faversham, London Victoria to Ramsgate/Dover and Sittingbourne to Sheerness-on-Sea.

An update by Southeastern shortly after 6.15pm confirmed its trains were no longer experiencing disruption.

Power to the tracks had been switched off - which has since been restored - and trains were held within stations until it was safe to continue.
