A man has appeared in court accused of the attempted murder of his grandmother and her sister.

Lincoln Payne, 29, was charged yesterday after his grandmother Maureen Burchett, 68, and her sister Lily McBride, 75, were stabbed and seriously injured in their home in Fostall Road, Faversham on Saturday evening.

He appeared at Maidstone Magistrates' Court accused of two counts of attempted murder, as well as robbery and theft.

He spoke only to confirm his name, age and his temporary address in Sittingbourne.

Prosecutor Debbie Jones told the court Payne arrived at his grandmother's house in Faversham at 5pm on Saturday.

She said Payne subjected them to a horrific assault leading to both women suffering life-threatening and life-changing injuries.

Both Maureen and Lily remain in a serious condition in major trauma units in two London hospitals.

Maureen suffered a large head wound, a number of fractured bones, multiple bruises and cuts, both front teeth knocked out, black eyes and three knife wounds on her head and neck.

Lily had a large abdominal stab wound which led to a laceration of the intestine. As a result, she has had to have five hours of surgery.

She also suffered wounds to her face, neck and wrist.

Magistrate Alfred Hake remanded Payne in custody until June 19 for a preliminary hearing at Maidstone Crown Court.

It comes after a neighbour spoke out about finding Lily on her doorstep with serious stab wounds on Sunday evening.

It is believed the women lay undiscovered for 24 hours before they were taken to hospital by air ambulance.
