Emergency crews worked to free a seriously injured man from the wreckage of a lorry crash this afternoon.

A lorry and a skip truck collided in Western Link, Faversham just before 12.30pm today.

Police, firefighters and ambulance crews were called and the air ambulance landed nearby before flying the injured man to hospital.

Witnesses reported seeing 10 police cars, three ambulances, two fire engines and the air ambulance.

The driver of the skip truck was seriously injured but the lorry driver is not known to have any injuries.

Incident commander Ian West who led the fire crews said: "The skip truck driver was trapped by his feet. The pedals were wrapped around his feet and the steering wheel went right into his stomach."

"The lorry was turning in and the guy coming up along the road in his skip truck hit it.

"We instantly called the Maidstone team who had all the heavy cutting gear.

"Luckily we managed to get him out before they arrived."

Fire crews believe the man is in his late 50s or early 60s.

Ian added: "He was conscious the whole time we were with him. We think he had some abdominal and pelvis injuries, as well as cuts and bruises.

"He was taken off in a stretcher with his leg in a splint."

Fire crews had to cut both doors and the front roof from the skip truck but managed to release him within an hour.

Lorries queued up the Western Link towards the A2 for more than an hour before the road was closed.

An air ambulance landed in a field opposite Sainsbury's in Bysing Wood Road and airlifted him to hospital.

Fire crews from Faversham, Sittingbourne and Maidstone attended.

The road re-opened at around 3pm this afternoon.
