Faversham: Police and paramedics descend on town centre

A man has been wrestled to the ground by police after an incident in a town centre this afternoon.

Police and paramedics descended on Market Place, Faversham, at around 1.15pm.

Witnesses saw a man running barefoot through the town before he was tackled to the floor by officers.

Jake Miles, from Carters Newsagents in Market Place, watched the drama unfold.

He said: "There was a lot going on.

"He came running into town with no shoes or socks on and it looked like he was being chased.

"About five police officers were holding onto him, and he would not get in the police car so other police vehicles turned up.

"There were three or four police cars there."

It is believed the man was taken away in an ambulance.

A police spokesman said: "Police officers attended Market Place, Faversham at 1.16pm, where a distressed man was detained under the Mental Health Act.

"South East Coast Ambulance Service also went to the scene and the man was taken to a local hospital for medical attention."
