Mann's lawyer disputes fair trial claims
09:12, 24 June 2004
STEPHEN JAKOBI, the lawyer acting on behalf of Kent firefighter Garry Mann, has taken issue with statements by senior Portuguese judges maintaining that his trial was conducted by proper legal procedures.
The 46-year-old was given a two-year jail sentence for rioting in the holiday resort of Albufeira, but has not begun his term since being deported back to England.
Senior judges in Portugal are adamant he will serve his sentence.
Mann is considering taking an appeal straight to the European Court of Human Rights, but Mr Jakobi does not believe the appeal would receive a proper hearing in Portugal.
