A husband and wife are “exceptionally proud” after their pub won two coveted AA Rosettes.

The Phoenix Tavern, which Kim Sharrock and Adrian Atkins opened just as lockdown ended, is Faversham’s only firm to hold the prestigious accolade.

Dating back to the 14th century, the tavern serves a contemporary British menu put together by head chef, Faversham born and bred Scott Pendry.

The AA Rosette Awards scheme celebrates restaurants across the country - qualifying for two rosettes means the pub is rated “excellent”.

Mr Pendry, 28, said: “I am so pleased that our work has been recognised and proud that we are able to share a menu that is creative, bold and exciting.

“I have lived in Faversham my whole life. To now be working back here, serving a menu that is my own, based on the knowledge and experience gained throughout my career, is very rewarding.”

The Phoenix Tavern owners are proud of both being recognised by the AA and for bucking the trend in hospitality that saw the UK lose more than 4,000 pubs and restaurants over the last year.

Faversham has seen its share of closures over the last 12 months, with the town saying goodbye to Boutilliers brewery, The Saddlers and The George Inn.

Co-owner Kim Sharrock, 59, said: “We are exceptionally proud of our Head Chef and team who trusted our vision for The Phoenix and committed to bringing it to life.

“We opened at the end of lockdown; working in an industry that is recovering from the pandemic and during a cost of living crisis. This award is really special, as a result.

“We are deeply appreciative of our customers who choose to spend their time with us and value what The Phoenix brings to Faversham.

“With a number of local businesses being forced to close in recent months, the Phoenix Tavern is working hard alongside other Faversham businesses to ensure Faversham stays on the map as somewhere to dine, drink and visit.”

The pub offers an à la carte, carte du jour, and tasting menus alongside more traditional Sunday lunch.

Recent dishes they have served have included duck leg accompanied by rhubarb and gingerbread, salmon served with a squid ink crisp and for dessert - white chocolate crémeux alongside a lime gel.

AA Rosettes have been awarded to restaurants since 1956, with the top award of five Rosettes first introduced in 1991.

The multi-rosettes are traditionally awarded twice annually, with success determined by one or more visits by an AA inspector to a hotel or restaurant.
