Application for 180 homes in Faversham submitted for land at Abbey Fields

A further 180 homes could be built in Faversham - despite several housing developments already being under construction across the town.
SW Attwood and Partners have submitted plans to create a range of two, three and four-bedroom properties on more than 32 acres of land at Abbey Fields.
The development - should it be given the green light by Swale Borough Council - would feature a play area for children as well as bike and foot paths to “prioritise pedestrian movement and connectivity to the surrounding area, encourage cycle and public transport usage”, while still accommodating cars.
A report compiled by JB Planning Associates on behalf of the applicant says: “The aim of the development is to create a sustainable, attractively landscaped neighbourhood extension to the north eastern side of Faversham.
“The site is in a highly sustainable location within walking distance of the town centre.
“It will also offer new publicly accessible open space and enhance the existing on site ecology, including new recreational routes, and children’s play area and a pavilion/ look-out structure benefitting both new and existing residents.”
The proposed site sits behind Abbotts Road - part of a residential estate off Whitstable Road.
The report adds: “The application site can be described as being of agricultural character and has many unique and interesting adjacencies and qualities to respond to: distinct views, unique edge and landscape conditions and the wider setting’s rich history.
“The scheme will seek to ensure that the new development is respectful of the existing heritage and landscape environment and integrates into the setting with minimal visual impact on the surrounding open countryside and the site of St Saviour’s Abbey and Faversham Abbey Barns - both Grade II-listed buildings.”
