Firefighters Louise Ayley and Emma Reynolds are getting ready to take on the world - at equestrian events.

Louise, who is based at Faversham, and Emma, who works at Canterbury fire station, are competing in the 10th World Firefighter Games in Liverpool.

They will be joined by Cheryl Garland, whose partner Dave Hulks works at Canterbury fire station.

Louise, who is specially trained in animal rescue, is also taking part in the cycling event.

She said: “I’m really looking forward to the games – I’ve been wearing my Team UK tracksuit at every opportunity.

“Obviously we have all got medal hopes, but mostly I’m looking forward to having fun and meeting counterparts from other UK fire and rescue services and beyond.”

The games, held every two years, are from August 24 to September 2 and are open to all firefighters and their partners.

Two thousand competitors from as far afield as New Zealand, South Africa and Thailand are expected to take part in the competition that has been held in the past in Hong Kong, Sydney and Las Vegas.

There are 73 sporting events such as cycling, archery and basketball, and for the first time, show jumping and dressage.
