Morrisons has announced one of its Kent stores is to close – with bosses blaming the poor performance of the site.
It was confirmed today the Faversham branch of the supermarket will bring the shutters down for the last time on September 17.
Speaking to KentOnline, a spokesman for the national giant revealed the reasons behind the decision.
They said: “Following a thorough review of the Faversham store's operation, unfortunately we do not believe performance is sustainable.
“We are therefore announcing today that we have made the difficult decision to sell the store.
“We are endeavouring to communicate and execute these changes carefully and thoughtfully with all those affected.
"We would like to welcome customers in the area to continue shopping with us at our Canterbury store or via Morrisons.com.”
With just under 500 stores in the UK – with 13 of those superstores in Kent – Morrisons is yet to confirm if any other stores in the county could suffer the same fate.
Having been in the town since 2009, the timeline for the sale of the North Lane property is yet to be unveiled.
It is not yet known what future the staff at the branch face – with many residents voicing their concern over the closure.
Taking to social media, one punter commented that it would “be a real shame if it does close down”.
“Such a real shame, staff are so lovely & friendly. [It] will be missed by a lot of people,” added another.
The potential fate of the site is currently up for debate, with some suggesting the area could be used for housing.
Other hopeful ideas included a nightclub, a dentist, a GP and a McDonald’s.
The supermarket made the headlines in February this year after controversy surrounding its installation of ANPR cameras.
Ralph Sinclair, who lives next to the superstore, had feared ANPR cameras installed without planning permission could be peering into his bedroom and bathroom.
