Two sisters who have run a hardware store in Faversham for decades are preparing to hand the reins over to new owners.

Judith Base and Beth Kendall will be retiring from the long-standing M&J Supplies in the coming weeks.

From supplying stock for rabbit hutches to helping with converting an entire house, the DIY business was kickstarted by their father Maurice John Weaver in 1977.

Its reputation as a friendly and reliable family-run builders merchants has helped the St John’s Road workshop become one of the town’s best-known firms.

Now, after spending more than four decades supplying the people of Faversham with hardware, Judith, 62, and Beth, 59, are calling it a day.

“We’ve had wonderful years here and really enjoyed all of it,” Judith said.

“It’s been our life so it will feel very strange.

“I’m looking forward to spending more time with my family.

“It’s always difficult to know at what stage to retire but we’ve decided it’s best to do it this year.

“We’ve met loads of lovely people and have had extremely loyal supporters over the years.

“We want it to continue and our customers want it to continue as it is, so we’re finding someone who can take it on with a seamless transition.

“All of the eight staff here will stay on and it’ll remain the business it is now - the only difference will be the owners.

“We’re going to really miss seeing the customers every day.

“This year has been more difficult with the Covid situation but we’ve managed and the demand for stock has been there.

“We’ve been very lucky that people have supported and helped us through.”

The site is currently on the market for an annual rent of £40,000.

Many customers have been left saddened by the impending departure of Judith and Beth, but wish them a well-deserved retirement.

Commenting on a Facebook post, Darius Wilson said: “Apart from the people of Faversham, so many local businesses, including my own, have benefited hugely from this brilliant shop/advice centre/community hub. You will be sorely missed.”
