Sunlight is suspected cause of fire at Faversham bungalow
00:20, 27 January 2018
A fire at a bungalow in Faversham is believed to have been caused by sunlight refracting onto bedding.
Fire crews suspect the sun’s rays triggered the blaze in Wells Way at just before 5pm yesterday.
The occupant spotted the flames and called 999 before fleeing the property.
Two fire engines were sent to the scene and firefighters went into the bungalow wearing breathing gear.
The blaze was extinguished with a hose before a ventilation fan was used to clear smoke.
A thermal imaging camera was also used to check for fire spread.
Crews left the scene at 7.15pm.
It is not known what the sun’s rays were refracting off, but similar fires in London have sparked warnings not to leave crystal or glass objects in direct sunlight.
