21:56, 17 June 2020

An eagle-eyed motorist spotted a lost tortoise walking over a bridge that runs over a busy highway.

Emma Miles was driving to see her parents at Monkshill Farm, Faversham, with her partner when she noticed something moving on the road on Sunday.

The bridge on Plumpudding Lane runs over the A299 Thanet Way.

Ms Miles, from Canterbury, stopped the car after she realised it was a tortoise.

"We picked it up but had no idea what to do with it so drove to Monkshill Farm and got a box off my mum to put him in," the 32-year-old said.

"I spoke to someone I knew who has a tortoise and she said to give him lettuce - but not iceberg."

She then posted in the Canterbury Residents' Group on Facebook and someone commented to say it it should be scanned so they took it to Pets at Home in Whitstable.

"They were as shocked as we were when we spotted it," she added.

"They scanned him but he didn’t have a chip and there wasn't a vet on site at the time.

"But a lady there said it needed a vet as it looked dehydrated and had bad skin.

"So they gave him some food and water - and we took him to Dover branch where they had a reptile specialist working."

She called the RSPCA on the way to log it with them in the hope they would find the owner.

"Me or my partner didn’t know anything about tortoises and just wanted it to get better so did what we could to help it - it turned into quite an interesting Sunday.

"My children wanted to keep it but I explained to them it was someone else’s pet and it needs to find its home. Fingers crossed it does."

The tortoise - which turned out to be female - has been handed into the care of Thanet Tortoise/Turtle & Terrapin Rescue.
