Faversham Town striker Luke Harvey says he felt terrible after being sent-off in the Ryman League play-off final at Worthing

Luke Harvey admitted he felt partly to blame for Faversham's Ryman League Division 1 South play-off final defeat at Worthing even though he didn’t think he should have been sent off.

Town were already 1-0 down when the 30-year-old striker was shown a straight red card by referee Gary Maskell after a 19th minute incident involving Worthing’s Will Hendon.

The pair went to ground after Hendon had fouled the Town man, and Mr Maskell then deemed Harvey to have deliberately pushed his opponent though video footage suggested any contact was minimal.

Harvey said he felt terrible and revealed he had apologised to his team-mates after the 3-0 defeat at Woodside Road adding: “First of all I’m devastated more just for the boys.

"Personally I don’t think I did anything wrong at all but whether I did or not, for those boys to do what they’ve done (this season) and for me to get sent off, you still feel responsible.

“It all happened so quickly to be honest, it was all heat of the moment. My right arm, you can see on the video, is on his leg. The ref said I’ve used my left arm to push his head down to the surface, to get myself up.

“But I think if you look at the video closely my left arm is on his left shoulder and if it’s anything it’s a yellow card.

“To give a red for that, for me, well I’m gutted to be honest. You’re going to get four or five sending-offs a game if you’re going to give red cards for that.

“To do all we’ve done this season, it was the nail in the coffin especially after the first goal. (Brannon O'Neill's corner was adjudged over the line before Liam King headed it out)
“It was hard for me to see but the boys are all insisting it was nowhere near over the line - it was a massive call.

“To be honest I thought we picked ourselves up pretty well after that and it looked like we were going to get back into the game and then to go down to 10 men it was just one of those days.”
