Faversham Town boss Ray Turner admits the Lilywhites will be underdogs for their games against Carshalton, Hastings and Tooting

00:00, 24 November 2016

Beleaguered Faversham need to channel the underdog spirit as they prepare to tackle three of the league’s top sides in consecutive games.

After the first-half abandonment of Monday’s game at struggling Chatham due to atrocious weather, Town are 15th in Ryman League, Division 1 South and 14 points behind the play-off places they have occupied in recent seasons.

The Lilywhites have lost five of their last six in the league and only won once in nine games in all competitions, some of the worst form since Turner took over as manager in early 2011.

He said: “The first season was difficult and the season after we lost in the play-off final to Maidstone in 2013, we had some bad results then. They say you learn more in difficult times, so I’m learning a lot at the moment.”

After Saturday’s 5-2 defeat against fourth-placed Greenwich, Town host third-placed Carshalton on Saturday (3pm) and Hastings on Tuesday (7.45pm) with second-placed Tooting to follow on December 3.

Carshalton have won five of their last six with Hastings steadily climbing the table with five wins in seven and games in hand on the play-off chasing pack.

Turner added: “It’s going to be a slightly different experience. We have been quite a big scalp in the division over the last couple of years but we’re certainly not going to be going into these games as favourites. These next three should be good games against title contenders.”

Turner claimed any hopes of his own side winning the title are already over as they are 25 points off the pace, albeit with four games in hand.

He said: “There’s still plenty of time but facts are facts. We have got no results against the top-five teams this season but it’s time to change that.

“We need to go and start enjoying ourselves. Hopefully, the supporters stay with us and it can flip quickly. Four or six points and all of a sudden you’re back in business.”

Town will be without defender Matt Bourne who is set to miss three weeks with an ankle injury which forced him off against Greenwich.
