Attacking midfielder Nathan Wood has made a fine start to the season at Faversham and the club’s management team are loving working with him.

Former Woking man Wood already has two goals to his name since his summer move to Salters Lane.

He also put in a player-of-the-match display last time out when the Lilywhites beat Ashford 1-0 to earn their first points of the campaign.

“He’s a good player, we knew that about Nathan,” said Faversham joint-manager John Embery.

“He’s a fans’ favourite already. He has that eye-catching ability and the boy works hard. We really like Nathan.

“He was one of the first people we tried to bring in.

"He’s getting himself fit after missing a lot of football, but we are getting the rewards.”

Wood is already catching the eye and, aged 22, with higher-league experience having worked under Alan Dowson - who is now at Dartford - he could attract interest if he continues to impress.

But Embery insisted: “He will not make a transfer sideways, the only way he will move is upwards.

“If he keeps playing well, he will get interest, of course he will, but I don’t think he will be leaving for [a club in the] same league.

“He’s loving it at the moment and we love working with the boy. He’s hard-working, as well, he will definitely be an eye-catcher in this league.”

Another to have impressed recently is ex-Gillingham attacker Toby Bancroft, who has started the last three fixtures.

Embery said: “He has made himself a starter. It shows, if you put the effort in, you will get your reward.”

The Lilywhites are in action this Saturday when they visit Chichester in the FA Trophy.

They had been due to play the same opponents seven days later in Isthmian South East, although that match has been pushed back until October 18 due to Chichester’s FA Cup commitments - they have been drawn to face Folkestone. Instead, Faversham will host VCD on September 17.

Town may not necessarily have wanted a 10-day break after they had earned their first points this season last Monday against the Nuts & Bolts.

Embery, who is in charge alongside joint-manager Jermaine Darlington, said: “You want a bit of momentum but it is what it is.

“It gives people like Tom Carlton, who has been working hard on his fitness, a few more days. You can see he’s getting there. It also gives players with knocks and niggles a chance to have a bit of recovery.

“It’s not a bad thing but, when you get a win, you kind of want to keep going but it is what it is.”

Recently-signed striker Junior Aikhionbare has recovered from a knock and was due to train for the first time with his new team-mates last week.

The winners of the FA Trophy tie will earn £1,500 in prize money.
