UK Power Networks said 626 customers were affected. It predicted the power would be back on between 5pm and 6pm. In the event, the blackout ended at 5.35pm.

The reason behind the loss of power stems from a fault with an underground electricity cable on the high voltage network.

One witness said a big bang was heard near the East Cliff just before the power was lost.

An earlier statement from UK Power Networks read: "Our engineers are on their way.

"At this point we think the issue is an underground cable fault that initially interrupted power to 2,081 properties.

"However, by rerouting electricity in the area, currently 626 customers are still affected.

"Using an average timescale, we're estimating power will be on between 17:00 and 18:00, but this may change later depending on what our staff find."
