A man in his 40s has been airlifted to hospital after a serious crash on the M20.

Emergency services were called just before 9.50am today to the motorway between Junctions 11 and 12 following a crash between a van and a lorry.

A man suffered serious injuries and the air ambulance was called to assist, before taking him to a London hospital.

Both carriageways were closed to allow it to land.

The route has since reopened to London-bound traffic and those using the entry slip road to Junction 11.

Officials from National Highways said: "This means traffic can now access Eurotunnel.

"However the road remains closed coastbound between Junction 11 (Westenhanger/Hythe) and Junction 12 and blocked westbound. There are severe delays in both directions."

A spokesman from Kent Police said: "Motorists are advised to avoid the area if at all possible, with the roads in and around Dover already very busy due to delays at the port.

"A closure remains in place for enquiries at the scene being carried out by specialist officers."

As of 9pm, the coastbound stretch remained closed.

Kent Fire and Rescue Service also attended the scene, sending three fire engines to the incident.

It meant more traffic woes amid chaos at the Port of Dover - where a major incident has been declared due to problems at the port.

Motorists are facing delays of up to four hours.
