Police and bomb disposal experts were called after a hand grenade was found in a Hythe field.
The Second World War weapon was discovered off Horn Street at just after 5.30pm yesterday.
A police spokesman said: "It appeared to have been in situ for some time."
Officers sealed off the area and the Army's Explosives Ordnance Disposal team arrived at the scene, close to the junction with Valestone Close.
The soldiers carried out a controlled explosion at just after 7pm.
Army spokesman Chris Fletcher said: "It was a Second World War vintage and it was blown up on-site by controlled detonation."
No properties had to be evacuated and the area was declared safe at about 8pm.
