The fire service has issued a warning after a bonfire is believed to have caused a hay bale fire.

The flammable bales caught light in Hockley Sole Lane, Capel-le-Ferne, near Folkestone at 12.14pm.

Two fire engines attended and crews extinguished the flames after more than an hour and a half by using hoses and drag rakes to bring it under control.

A fire service spokesman said: "It’s believed strong winds blew embers from a nearby bonfire towards the hay bales, and caused them to catch alight.

"No casualties were reported.

"People are reminded the current advice is not to have bonfires, but if you do choose to have one, please do so safely.

"Bonfires should be lit well away from any buildings, trees and fences. It’s also best to inform your neighbours in advance to avoid any concern."
