Huge queues built up on the M20 amid French trials for post-Brexit procedures.
A long line of trucks were halted in their efforts to access the Eurotunnel near Folkestone, with the jam stretching back to Junction 11.
A source noted that traffic is normally heavier at the beginning of the week, but has been compounded by French authorities trialling post-Brexit boarding systems.
One motorist said that police barred entry to the motorway from Junction 11, and drivers were warned that anyone heading into Dover may have a delay.
Operations have now ceased, and delays and tailbacks have eased in the area.
The queues were not related to any police operations, with a police spokeswoman saying: "We have no reports of any particular incidents in that area which might cause congestion."
