Police have fined a coach driver transporting children after it was found he had been on the road for nearly seven hours non-stop.

Officers from the Kent Roads Policing Unit said he had driven nearly 13 hours in a single day with just over five hours of rest only.

They said the driver had been "fined heavily".

He was caught just an hour after another coach full of passengers had to be stopped because the driver had failed to take enough rest.

Police stopped the vehicle at the Eurotunnel in Folkestone at 4pm today.

The 31-year-old driver, who is French, had not been given a weekend break in 24 days.

Officers, who were from the Commercial Vehicle Unit, ordered the driver to pay a £300 fixed penalty notice.

The passengers were driven to the nearest service station for their comfort.

They had to wait until a replacement driver arrives.
