Police patrols will be stepped up in an effort to catch drivers under the influence of alcohol and drugs, the force announced today.

Motorists are urged to drive safely during the festive period as part of a national campaign targetting those who take the risk of driving under the influence.

Sergeant Ben Brennan said in a statement today: "At this time of year we know everyone wants to go out and enjoy themselves but we ask people to do so responsibly and to make arrangements to get home safely.

"Drivers are not only risking their own life, but the lives of their passengers as well as other innocent motorists or pedestrians.

"As always our message remains the same - there is no excuse for driving under the influence."

The force said it will target high risk locations to identify and prosecute motorists who are impaired by alcohol or drugs.

Officers will be carrying out breath tests, roadside drug swipes and field impairment tests day and night, according to a statement released this morning.
