The 38-year-old was thrown out of the shop but then started banging on the window of a van in nearby Cheriton Road and shouting at a man sitting in the vehicle.

This was spotted by police and McLaughlin was arrested.

When he was taken into custody and searched, officers found a small quantity of cocaine on him.

McLaughlin, of Cheriton Road, was charged with being drunk and disorderly and in possession of cocaine and admitted both offences when he appeared at Folkestone Magistrates' Court on Wednesday (February 15).

The court heard when he was arrested he was found with 0.2 grams of cocaine in his wallet.

District Judge Justin Barron was told McLaughlin accepted he was intoxicated and his behaviour had changed because he had consumed alcohol.

However, his solicitor added that since the incident McLaughlin had not been drinking.

The court was also told he has a long record of similar convictions, but had not been before the courts for some time.

McLaughlin - who is signed off sick with arthritis - was fined £120 for each offence and ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £96, plus £85 costs.

DJ Barron added: "It was a small amount of cocaine and you've not been before the courts for quite a long time."
