A now-closed nursery inside a prominent seafront building could be transformed into a health clinic.

Plans have been submitted to turn part of the Grade II-listed site, formerly the Metropole hotel, which resides along The Leas in Folkestone, into a physiotherapy centre.

After its closure in 1959, the hotel was transformed into flats, and over the years, it has housed various commercial enterprises, including a restaurant and a gym.

The former Metropole Nursery is situated in the basement of the building and currently sits empty.

In planning documents submitted to Folkestone & Hythe District Council (FHDC), the applicant, Kartik Tewari, states the site is a “prime location” for a physiotherapy clinic.

“Injuries are a common part of life, arising from sports, chronic conditions, or the natural ageing process,” he says.

“The role of physiotherapy is increasingly recognized for its ability to enhance mobility, restore bodily functions, alleviate pain, and prevent future injuries.

“The site is encircled by residential streets, which makes it a prime location for a physiotherapy clinic.

“Its location is in a densely populated residential area, along with its closeness to many doctors' offices, increases its potential for NHS referrals.

“Furthermore, the site is easily reachable by car, bus – with a bus stop right outside the premises – bicycle, and on foot.”

The former nursery space included a reception area, two staff toilets, a children's toilet, two general play areas, a medical and changing area, a wet play area, an office bay, a kitchen, and a storage area.

The Metropole opened as a hotel in Folkestone in July 1879.

A decision is expected to be made on the plans for the physiotherapy clinic by December 17. No comments have been submitted to FHDC.
