Stenciled artwork of major music and acting legends has appeared on hoardings that surround the building site of a new supermarket.

The mystery artist left the sketches on plain black boards that seal off the construction site of a new and improved Lidl in Haven Drive, Hawkinge.

The faces of Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie and Marlon Brando now greet people who are parking up in the opposite Mayfly pub car park.

Jimi Hendrix was an American rock guitarist who died in the seventies, David Bowie was an English singer, songwriter and actor who died in January last year.

Marlon Brando was an an American actor, film director and activist who died in 2004.

It is thought to have appeared overnight on Saturday.

The new creations have been met with praise as people began guessing who the works resembled.

It is not known whether the white spray paint will be scrubbed off - as the new two-storey, glass fronted shop is not due to open until the end of this year.

It will be double the size of the former store which closed on New Year’s Eve last year and was flattened shortly afterwards.
