Passengers trying to cross the Channel have faced lengthy delays again after 'migrant activity' in Calais.

Eurotunnel this morning warned passengers they face waits of up to five hours following the latest incident.

A spokesman said: "Passenger service has been suspended from both sides due the migrants activity around our French Terminal.

"We apologise for the delay. Please be assured we always work hard to maintain the highest levels of security at our Calais terminal."

This afternoon Eurotunnel said that there was a "considerable improvement" with waiting down to one hour on site, with 30 minutes pre-check in.

The spokesman added: "Traffic is very heavy for passengers as this is the big holiday getaway weekend, but we have four departures per hour and are doing everything we can to get customers over to France as fast as possible."

The latest delays follow an incident on Thursday when the body of a young man trying to enter the country was found on the roof of a Eurotunnel train at the terminal in Folkestone.

The death came on the same day a national newspaper released footage filmed by a worker of 40 illegal migrants riding on the carriage of an empty freight train as it arrives at the Folkestone terminal.

The unnamed worker told The Sun: "The last incident happened on Monday, pretty much where the train gets into the UK. There were about 80 just sat there. When it stopped the police came down and picked them up.

"They shouldn't be sending trains through with immigrants on them.

"Some have fallen off and died. It seems to happen on a lot of the nights."

The migrants are taking advantage of travel chaos at Calais to board the empty carriages in a bid to enter the UK.

Meanwhile, Operation Stack remains in place this morning. Tourists heading to Dover are advised to use the M2/A2 route, but have been warned that too is likely to be busy and to allow extra time for journeys.
