Kent seaside town of Folkestone beats destinations in Sweden and Australia to reach Guardian's top 40 of holiday hotspots
11:50, 06 January 2014
Wish you were here? Folkestone has made it into a top 40 of worldwide hot holiday destinations for 2014.
The seaside town ranked above Australian capital Canberra and Umea, in Sweden, in the national newspaper list.
It is ranked 38th in The Guardian's holiday hotspots for this year in a league table that also features Moscow, Abu Dhabi and Brazil.
The South African city of Cape Town comes top of the pile as the place to visit this year.
Folkestone's emerging art scene and Creative Quarter is the main reason the town features on the list.
The guide highlights the Triennial - between August 30 and November 2 - as the main event going on this year.
And perhaps another summer heatwave will attract people to the stretches of sands as bathers seek to top up their tan rather than head to more exotic climes.
But as well as the Triennial, Folkestone will hope to draw crowds during several other events throughout the year.
The return of the Airshow, the War and Peace Revival and the First World War commemorations are all set to be big days in the 2014 calendar.
What do you think? Is Folkestone in your hotlist of travel destinations?
